  • Federal Budget and housing: the action appears to be somewhere else

    14 June, 2012

Going by yesterday’s federal Budget, you wouldn’t know that 1 in 5 Australian households are in housing stress. No growth fund for affordable rental housing. No increase in Rent Assistance. What’s the matter with our governments?

Fortunately, community organisations are stepping up to the challenge. They are developing a wide range of affordable housing options, and in innovative ways.

You can hear about some of these and share your experiences at our conference: Shelter NSW’s ‘Explorations in nonprofit housing’ conference is on June 14 in Sydney.

You can register before May 31 to take advantage of the early bird discount.

The conference is being opened by the Hon. Pru Goward, MP, NSW Minister for Family and Community Services. Professor Peter Phibbs will be giving a keynote in his inimitable style. And there’s a great bunch of other speakers, all listed in the program on our website.

We thank our generous sponsors: City West Housing, Matrix On Board, St George Community Housing, and UnitingCare Children, Young People and Families.

    More information is at <http://www.shelternsw.org.au/>.
