    GENERAL NEWS

Deaf Society Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme

The NSW Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme is a joint initiative between the Deaf Society of NSW and Fire and Rescue NSW, made possible with funding from the NSW Department of Family and Community Services; Ageing, Disability and Home Care. The NSW Government is providing the SASS project $2 million over a period of three years. The money will be spent on alarms for people who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing.

A standard smoke alarm costs around $50, but a smoke alarm with a strobe light, pillow shaker and beeper can cost around $500, which is cost prohibitive for many people. This is why the NSW government established SASS. The scheme will cover the costs of the alarm; however, you must pay a $50 fee with your application.

Supported living for people with a disability

The NSW Government announced that Family Advocacy will run a series of information sessions about supported living for people with a disability, their families and carers.

Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance said Family Advocacy, in partnership with the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability, will assist people with a disability, their families and carers to build person-centred and sustainable living arrangements which are flexible and individualised.

“We have committed $60 million to the Supported Living Fund over the next five years, as part of Stronger Together 2, to provide support for 300 individuals,” Mr Constance said.

“We have listened to the community and know that access to good information and sharing stories is so important.”

National Disability Research and Development Steering Committee

Disability Services Ministers have endorsed the National Disability Research and Development Agenda. The Research Agenda aims to increase the focus in research on issues facing people with disability and seeks to provide sound evidence for future policy and practice decisions that will ultimately lead to improved outcomes for Australians with disability.

The Australian, State and Territory governments have committed funding for disability research and development. This funding supports the delivery of the objectives and reform priorities of the National Disability Agreement and the National Disability Strategy. Priority will be given to funding research, projects and initiatives that seek to adopt partnerships and collaborations with the disability sector, with people with disability or with other relevant sectors and disciplines.

The Disability Policy and Research Working Group website will be a key source of information regarding the implementation of the Agenda. This will include information on how to apply for funding, details of commissioned research and the outcomes of research undertaken.

For more information relating to the Agenda, contact Ms Mary Osborn, Senior Policy Officer, DPRWG Secretariat by email at mary.osborn@facs.nsw.gov.au

    ACOSS Budget Priority Statement

In this submission, ACOSS outlines policy recommendations for consideration by the Federal Government in its 2012-13 Budget. The submission aims to resolve the tension between the Government’s commitment to restore the Budget to surplus from 2012-13 and the urgency of social and economic needs not yet met, of key social and economic reforms not yet completed.

Our priority for the 2012-13 Federal Budget remains to ensure that no person is excluded from the benefits of economic growth and prosperity and from the opportunity to fully participate in society. Some of the policy building blocks to meet this goal have been laid, including the commitment to introduce a National Disability Insurance Scheme, the emerging policy focus on employment participation for people excluded from the labour market, and last year’s mental health reform package.

ACOSS National Conference 2012 - “Sharing the Wealth of the ‘Lucky’ Country” 29-30th March

The ACOSS conference theme for 2012 is ‘Sharing the wealth of the lucky country’. Australians’ material wealth is booming but the proceeds are not being equally shared. New research shows that inequalities are rising in Australia. While the post-tax income of the poorest households is actually falling, the richest Australian households continue to earn more and more.

It is an important moment, therefore, to reflect on what must be done to ensure Australia remains the fair and inclusive society we pride ourselves on being.

    When: 29-30th March 2012

    Where: Australian Technology Park, Sydney

Registrations are now open for the 2012 ACOSS National Conference – the premier national event for policy-makers, researchers and those engaged in social services or advocacy across Australia.
