Save the Date: Men's Proactive Suicide Prevention, 3 Feb 2020.
As many of you would know, for the past few years SWSPHN along with a range of community partners and commissioned services have aimed to ensure that our region has a number of of multi-level suicide prevention activities that range from education, means restriction, community awareness, right through to aftercare support.
Whilst these are all very positive building blocks, the region as yet hasn’t had a focused opportunity to look at the needs of men in our region who may be at risk of losing their lives to suicide.
We know that:
- Across the country 6 out of 8 suicides per day are men
- male suicide increased by 41% in the decade from 2006 to 2015,
- In 2015 there were 2,292 suicides
- suicide is the second biggest killer of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men and boys.
SWSPHN know that there are many of you out there that are just as passionate as we are about this issue and want to do everything that can be done to see these rates drop significantly . To support this will be looking to develop and fund a range on new men’s suicide prevention initiatives over the coming years.
To ensure the approaches developed tap into the need’s men are facing and represent the ways men may begin to get proactive in seeking support we will be holding a co design session on 3 February 2020 at Rydges in Campbelltown.
This will be a whole day event to ensure we are presenting you all with the latest available literature, presentations from services that have already begun great works in the men’s suicide prevention space and of course a chance to help design the types of approaches you wish to see in this region.
It will be your chance to have you say in helping men become more proactive around reducing their risk of suicide, so don’t miss out on your chance to get involved!
A formal invite will be issue over the next week but please use this as a save the date and keep your calendar free.
Any questions please feel free to call me to discuss.
