From 1 May 2018, legislation requires Australian Government-subsidised residential aged care providers to offer the flu vaccine to staff and volunteers.

Vaccination is vital for staff and volunteers in aged care, where the flu can spread quickly and have devastating results for residents.

As part of the mandatory vaccination program, residential aged care providers will be required to:

  • provide staff and volunteers with access to a free flu vaccination each year
  • promote the benefits of the vaccination, including for the health outcomes of residents
  • keep a record of the number of staff and volunteers that receive a flu vaccination each year (whether or not under the flu Vaccination Program).

Vaccinations can be offered either directly or indirectly, such as providing vaccinations on-site or making arrangements for staff to access the vaccination at a local chemist or general practitioner.
